The awakening of self

The two states of belief and disbelief correspond admirably to the two results of the event happening and not happening respectively, and unless for psychological purposes we saw no reason to analyse further; but to partial belief there is nothing corresponding in the result, for the event cannot partially happen in such cases as we are concerned with. We either use the same thing over and over again or different ones made according to precisely the same model. Even when he connects these states with the self which experiences them, the English philosopher still insists on setting up clear-cut distinctions: “The conflict is between me and myself; between (for instance) me desiring a pleasure and me dreading self-reproach.”[4] Bain, for his part, devotes a whole chapter to the “Conflict of Motives.”[5] In it he balances pleasures and pains as so many terms to which one might attribute, at least by abstraction, an existence of their own. His Jacob’s Ladder is more like a dream than any other picture that ever was painted. There is no vice that doth so cover a man with shame, as to be found false and perfidious; and therefore Montaigne[51] saith prettily, when he inquired the reason why the word of the lie should be such a disgrace, and such an odious charge: saith he, “If it be well weighed, to say that a man lieth, is as much as to say that he is brave towards God and a coward towards men. There is a languor in the air; and the contagion of listless apathy infects the hopes that are yet unborn.—As to what remains of actual power and spiritual authority, Hobbes said well, that ‘Popery was the ghost of the Roman Empire, sitting upon the ruins of Rome.’ The only flourishing thing in Rome (and that is only half flourishing) is an old woman; and who would wish to be an old woman? When serving Jahveh faithfully, they would have good fortune; after falling away from him, they would quickly be plunged in calamity. He reigns twenty-eight years, or lives as long.”[172] Thus the history of Osiris is “the history of the circle of the year,” and in his resurrection as Horus we see the sun resuscitating itself after its temporary eclipse during the winter solstice.
