Okay, I have a serious problem. My essay is due next week, and I have a mountain of research. I have like five solid points that all seem super convincing to me. But my outline feels like a Frankenstein's monster—just a bunch of parts stitched together. I know I need to focus on the strongest claims, but how do you guys decide which ones make the cut and which ones end up on the cutting room floor? Do you go with the most emotional appeal, or the one with the hardest stats? I'm spiraling a little because I want this to be perfect. Any advice on refining arguments would be a lifesaver! 🆘

Here's how I decide:

The "So What?" Test
For each argument, ask: "If my reader accepts this point, does it actually move them toward my conclusion?" If it doesn't directly support your thesis, cut it (or save it for another paper).

The "Evidence Strength" Test
Some arguments feel strong but have weak evidence. Others are less flashy but rock-solid. Go with the solid ones. Credibility beats emotional appeal every time if the emotion isn't backed up.

The "One-Sentence" Test
If you can't summarize the argument in one clear sentence, it's probably too complex for one essay. Simplify or cut.
