I moved to California specifically because I heard it was safer. Back home, I couldn't use the bathroom without fear. I couldn't be me.

California has laws. Strong ones. The SAFE Schools Act has been around for years. It says schools can't discriminate based on gender identity. Students can use facilities matching their identity. That's huge. 😭

But laws are one thing. Culture is another. Is a school with good policies actually safe? Or do kids still get harassed while teachers look away?

I'm looking at colleges now. I need real answers, not just website promises. If you're LGBTQ in a California school—tell me the truth. Is it actually okay? 🥺

Let me break down the legal protections:

State law: SAFE Schools Act = you can use facilities matching identity. Discrimination banned.

New 2026: AB 727 = Trevor Project number on ALL student IDs

New 2026: SB 1328 = every CSU and community college campus must have a designated LGBTQ+ point of contact, including at satellite centers

New 2026: Religious schools with exemptions must DISCLOSE

UC system: Explicit nondiscrimination policies covering gender identity and expression
