Cal Grant A vs. B? I'm so confused. Which one is better for a low-income transfer?

Hey everyone. I’m a returning student at a community college in the Central Valley, planning to transfer to a CSU for the Fall 2025 semester. I'm filling out my FAFSA and the Cal Grant GPA verification form, and I'm hitting a wall of confusion.

I meet the income requirements, and my GPA is solid (around 3.6). My question is about the Cal Grant A vs. Cal Grant B. I've read the official descriptions like ten times, but I still don't feel like I understand the real-world difference for someone in my shoes.

From what I can gather:

• A: Pays tuition at a CSU/UC.
• B: Gives a smaller stipend (access award) for living expenses/books for the first year, and then pays tuition for the remaining years.

Since I'm a transfer student, how does that work? I only have two years left. Would getting the "B" mean I get a tiny bit of cash for my junior year, and then tuition covered for my senior year? That seems kinda messy. Wouldn't the "A" be better because it just covers tuition right away for both years?

I really need the help with living costs, but I also need my tuition paid. For transfer students, is one grant objectively better than the other? Any CS Unicorns or UC peeps out there who've navigated this? Appreciate any clarity you can offer. This process is exhausting.

Cal Grant A (Transfer Entitlement):

• Covers tuition only (about $5,742/year at CSU)
• No money for books, food, rent, etc.
• Requires 2.4 GPA minimum for transfer students

Cal Grant B (Transfer Entitlement):

• Covers tuition (same $5,742/year at CSU)
• PLUS gives you an "access award" of about $1,648/year for living expenses
• Requires 2.0 GPA minimum for community college transfers

For a low-income student, B is almost always better because you get that extra cash for living costs. The only catch is that B has stricter income limits than A. But if you qualify for both, definitely take B.
