Free grammar checker vs. paid: is it worth upgrading?

I'm at a crossroads. I've been using the same free grammar checker for two years, and it's been great for catching my basic typos and comma splices. But now I'm taking this upper-level writing seminar, and my professor's feedback is less about grammar and more about "style," "tone," and "flow."

My free version just isn't cutting it for that. It keeps telling me my sentences are "wordy" but can't really tell me how to fix them in a sophisticated way.

I tried the premium trial of another popular checker, and it actually suggested ways to vary my sentence structure and made my arguments sound more persuasive. It was kind of amazing. But it's also like $30 a month, which is real ramen money.

For those of you who've made the leap, is a paid grammar checker actually worth it for higher-level writing? Does it help with things beyond just comma errors? Or can you get the same results by just being more disciplined with the free version and your own brain? I need advice from fellow broke but ambitious students.
