Is it hard to transfer to a California university? Yes, but worth it. 😅

Transferring to a California university from community college has been harder than I expected. Analí Salazar, a transfer student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, described her experience: "Going from a school where we had an environment where it was all people of color, all coming from similar backgrounds, to coming to a campus where everyone's white, it's definitely a transition to say the least."

She also noticed the social difference: "seeing a huge group of frat boys walking towards me. I am a small person. I am a five-foot little brown girl. So seeing a huge group of, like, 6'3" white frat men — not a great feeling."

The academics are fine. The social part? That's the real challenge. 😬

The cultural whiplash of transferring is real and rarely discussed. Analí's experience is so common. Going from a community where you're the majority to suddenly being "the only one" is disorienting and lonely.

But you WILL find your community. It takes time. Look for cultural centers on campus, ethnic studies departments, student orgs. Those spaces exist specifically for students like you. Use them.

And remember: you belong there as much as anyone else.
