Why I'm starting at community college for marine biology

When I tell people I'm studying marine biology at Cabrillo College, some look confused. “Why not start at a four-year?” they ask. Because I'm being smart. Because I'm being strategic.

The cost is real. A student review said: “I saved so much money at Cabrillo. My friends at UCSC are drowning in debt. I'll graduate with manageable loans.”

The teaching is better. Another reviewer wrote: “My professors at Cabrillo actually teach. They're not researchers who delegate to TAs. I get personal attention.” At a big university, I'd be one of 300. At Cabrillo, I'm a name.

The hands-on learning is incredible. One student said: “We go to the ocean. We're in the lab. We're doing real science.” I'm not just reading about marine biology; I'm doing it.

The transfer path is clear. Cabrillo has a strong relationship with UC Santa Cruz. My advisor helped me map out every class I need. I'm not wasting time or credits.

I'm not settling. I'm building a foundation. When I transfer, I'll have strong grades, real lab experience, and a fraction of the debt. My friends at four-year schools might be ahead in years, but I'll be ahead in knowledge and savings.

I'm proud of my path. And when I walk into my first class at UCSC, I'll be ready.
