Bay Area jobs for students that don't require a car? (I can't afford one 💀)

I go to SF State and I live in the Sunset district. I don't have a car because (a) I can't afford one and (b) parking in this city is literally a nightmare. So I rely on Muni and BART to get around. 🚋

My current job is at a retail store in Union Square. The pay is okay ($18/hr) but the commute is KILLING me. It takes an hour each way on the N Judah, sometimes longer if there are delays (which is always). That's 10 hours a week just on transit. I'm exhausted all the time and I have no time to study. 😴

I need a job that's either:
  • Close to where I live (Sunset/Richmond area)
  • Close to campus
  • Or fully remote
I'm a communications major so I'm open to all kinds of stuff - admin work, social media, retail, food service (maybe), anything really. I just can't do the long commute anymore. It's destroying my GPA and my sanity. 📉

Does anyone know of good student jobs in the Sunset? Or near SF State? I've checked the campus job board but a lot of them are work-study and I don't qualify for work-study (my family makes "too much" on paper but in reality we're barely getting by).

Also, if anyone knows of remote jobs that hire SF students, drop those below. I have a laptop, wifi, and I'm good at writing and social media. I just need something that doesn't require me to spend 2 hours on a crowded train every day. 🚇

I work for Associated Students at SF State and it's been the best job I've had . They have tons of positions - event planning, marketing, admin work. It's on campus, they work around your classes, and you're not wasting time commuting. Plus it looks good on a resume because you're working for the university.

Also, if you qualify for work-study (even if you don't think you do, double check with financial aid - sometimes it's available), the Community Work-Study program through ICCE has paid internships with community organizations . They work 6-10 hours/week, in-person but usually in the city, and they're super flexible.

The Sunset has plenty of retail and food service jobs too - check Taraval Street or Noriega.
