I've been researching scholarships specifically for transfer students in California and here's what I've discovered. Sharing for anyone in the same boat:

Cal Grant A & B Transfer Entitlement Awards
  • For California community college students transferring to CSU, UC, or eligible private colleges
  • Cal Grant A covers tuition at CSU/UC
  • Cal Grant B provides stipend for living expenses plus tuition coverage
  • Must have 2.4 GPA, meet income limits, and submit FAFSA by March 2
Guzman-Valdez Scholarship
  • For Latina students transferring from a California community college to a four-year university
  • Awards up to $2,500
  • Requires essay, letters of recommendation, and demonstrated community involvement
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship
  • Up to $55,000 per year — literally life-changing
  • For high-achieving community college students with financial need
  • Extremely competitive but worth applying
Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships
  • Many universities offer scholarships specifically for PTK members
  • CSUs and UCs participate — worth joining PTK if you qualify
UC Transfer Pathways Scholarships
  • Some UC campuses have scholarships specifically for transfer students
  • Vary by campus and major
CSU Transfer Student Scholarships
  • Each CSU campus has its own foundation scholarships
  • Often require separate applications
The UC Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program doesn't give money directly but guarantees admission to six UC campuses, which can help with planning .

For transfer students who've successfully gotten scholarships: what worked? Any tips for standing out? I'm applying to everything. 🤞

The Jack Kent Cooke scholarship is the holy grail. Up to $55k/year for 3 years . They look for "high-achieving community college students with financial need." The application is intense — essays, rec letters, transcripts — but if you're a strong candidate, it's worth it. The deadline is usually January . Start early.

Also, UC Transfer Pathways scholarships are major-specific. If you're in STEM, check if your intended major has extra scholarship opportunities. Some departments have their own money.
