Here's my job-hunting playbook:
1. State government jobs. California has a whole portal (CalCareers) with "Student Assistant" positions. They're made for students—flexible hours, relevant work. Search "environmental" or "scientific aid." Pay is okay ($17-22/hr) and they understand school comes first .
2. UC Berkeley's job board. You don't have to be a Cal student to apply for some research assistant positions. They do tons of enviro work and often need part-time help.
3. Environmental consulting firms. Companies like WSP, AECOM, and local firms often hire part-time field techs. The work can be tough (early mornings, weird hours) but looks amazing on a resume .
For friends: I know it's cliché, but join a club based on an ACTIVITY, not just a major. Hiking club, surf club, board game night—whatever. Repeated exposure to the same people is how adult friendships happen. Also, the "never turn down an invitation" rule is real . Even if you're tired. Even if it's far. Say yes for the first six months.
