I'm transferring to SDSU as a junior and I'm terrified of being the new kid. A student review said: “There's a transfer orientation, which helps. You meet people in the same boat” . Another said: “If you live off campus, you have to be intentional. Join a club or you'll feel isolated.”

The Transfer Student Center offers events, advising, and a community space. A reviewer said: “I went to a transfer coffee hour and met my best friend there.” Another mentioned: “The Transfer Center also has a mentorship program where you're paired with an upperclassman who transferred.”

I'm also looking at clubs. One student said: “The SDSU outdoor club is huge. They do hikes and camping trips. It's a great way to meet people.” Another recommended: “Join a club related to your major. You'll meet people with similar interests and also build your network.”

For current transfer students, how did you find your community? What's the best way to meet people when you're not living in the dorms? I'm willing to put myself out there, but I need to know where to start.

Linda, I lived off campus and felt super isolated my first month. Then I joined the SDSU Outdoors Club. Best decision. We went on a weekend camping trip to Joshua Tree. I knew no one. By the end of the trip, I had a group chat of 12 people. The club does weekly hikes, rock climbing, and even surfing. You don't need experience. Just a willingness to be outside and talk to strangers. That's the secret. 🏕️
