I actually used expository writing in real life (and it worked)

This is hilarious but I have to share. 🚗

My roommate and I were arguing about whether it was better to lease or buy a car. We were just going in circles with opinions and emotions.

Then I literally said "okay, let me write a pro-con list with sources" and spent an hour researching. I came back with actual numbers—depreciation rates, interest calculations, maintenance costs—and presented it like a mini expository essay. We made a decision based on facts instead of feelings! My roommate called me a nerd but also thanked me because we saved money.

I never thought I'd use this class in real life but here we are. Has anyone else had a random moment where your academic writing skills actually helped in the real world?

Iden, this is genuinely the best example of "transferable skills" I've ever heard. 👏

You basically did a cost-benefit analysis with proper research methodology. Depreciation rates, interest calculations, maintenance costs—that's not just expository writing, that's personal finance 101. Most adults make car decisions based on vibes and monthly payment amounts without understanding the math underneath.

The fact that you saved money because you took an hour to research instead of argue? That's a win. Your roommate calling you a nerd is just jealousy disguised as affection.

Real talk: what did you end up deciding? Lease or buy?
