Got my research paper proposal back today. My professor wrote: "Excellent source selection. You've clearly mastered the research process. Where did you learn to do this?"
I almost laughed out loud. Mastered the research process? Three weeks ago I didn't know what a database was. Two weeks ago a librarian had to explain Boolean operators to me like I was five. Last week I cried in the stacks because I found a perfect article I actually understood.
But I wrote back honestly: "A librarian taught me. I should have asked sooner."
My professor responded: "Smart students ask for help. The best ones keep asking."
That actually meant a lot. Because for so long I thought asking for help meant I was failing. That I should already know this stuff. That everyone else had it figured out and I was just behind.
Turns out, asking for help IS the skill. Not knowing everything. Just being willing to learn.
If you're struggling with something, ask. Ask professors, ask librarians, ask classmates. The worst they can say is no. The best? They might change everything.
