Everyone sleeps on UC Riverside. It's not Berkeley. It's not UCLA. It doesn't have the beach vibe of Santa Cruz or the prestige of SD. But honestly? That's what makes it great.
The diversity is real. UCR is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. The student body is incredibly diverse—not just in demographics but in perspectives. You learn as much from your classmates as from professors.
The research opportunities are everywhere. Because we're not the "flagship" UC, undergrads actually get to do research. My friend is a sophomore and already co-authoring a paper in entomology. Try that at Berkeley.
The location is misunderstood. Yes, Riverside is hot. Like, surface-of-the-sun hot in summer. But it's also an hour from the beach, an hour from the mountains, an hour from L.A., an hour from Palm Springs. You're in the middle of everything. And the cost of living is way lower than coastal California.
The vibe is chill. There's no pressure to be perfect. People are here to learn and improve their lives, not to compete for Instagram pics. It's a "come as you are" kind of place.
We're on the rise. The university is investing millions in new buildings, research, and faculty. The trajectory is up.
If you want the UC degree without the UC stress (and without the UC price tag for housing), look at Riverside. Anyone else love this school?
