What are California's new trans student laws for 2026? I'm trying to keep up.

Every year, California passes more laws protecting students like me. 2026 is no different. Here's what's changing—or already changed:

Gender-neutral bathrooms (SB 760): By July 2026, every school must have at least one gender-neutral bathroom, unlocked and accessible to all students . This is huge. No more choosing between the wrong bathroom or holding it all day. 🚻

Student ID cards with crisis resources: Student IDs for grades 7-12 and public universities must now include the Trevor Project crisis hotline . 24/7 suicide prevention. For LGBTQ+ youth. Knowing that number is on my card... it matters. 🫂

Mental health resources: California is pouring money into school mental health services. More counselors. More training. More help for kids who are struggling.

What's being debated now: There are always new bills. Some would require schools to affirm trans students' identities. Some would push back against federal attacks. It's constant. 🏛️

What this means for me: I feel... seen. Like someone actually thought about what I need. Not every state does that. Not even close.

But I'm also watching closely. Laws can change. Courts can strike them down. Nothing is permanent. So I'm paying attention. Siempre atenta. 👀

The mental health funding is real. My school just hired two more counselors and one specifically works with LGBTQ+ students. Not sure which bill that came from but it's definitely connected to all the new laws pushing for more support. Also the Trevor Project on IDs is going to save lives. Having that number right there when you're in crisis? That matters.
