I'm an international student and I'm terrified to write a research paper in English. Any advice?

I've been studying in the US for two years. My spoken English is fine, I can participate in class, and I understand the readings. But writing a 20-page research paper in academic English feels like climbing a mountain. I'm scared my grammar will be clunky, my sentence structures will be repetitive, and my professor will just think I'm dumb. I spend hours on a single paragraph, and it still sounds wrong. I know the content—I understand the theories—but I can't express them elegantly.

Does anyone have resources for non-native speakers trying to tackle American academic writing? Are there specific tools or websites that help with academic phrasing without crossing into 'cheating' territory? I'm not trying to plagiarize; I just need help sounding like I belong here.

Academic English is basically its own dialect. You wouldn't expect to learn southern slang in a week, so don't expect academic writing to come fast either.

Resources that actually help:
  • Purdue OWL - the global section has specific tips for non-native writers
  • Writefull - it's like Grammarly but designed for academics. Shows you how often certain phrases appear in real academic papers
  • Your professors' office hours - bring a draft and literally say "does this sound like academic English?" Most appreciate the effort
Also, record yourself explaining your argument verbally, then transcribe it (Otter.ai is free). Sometimes our spoken ideas are clearer than our written ones. Then you can "academic-ify" your own words.
