Hey everyone! I'm a junior, and I'm starting to think about internships for next year. I know my resume needs a lot of work, and I'm considering using professional resume writing services. However, I've also heard horror stories about scams and people getting terrible results.

I'm doing my research, and I wanted to share some red flags I've identified, and also ask for your advice on what to look for:

Red Flags I've Noticed:
  1. Prices that are too good to be true: I saw one for $19.99. For that price, they're probably just running your resume through a software template.
  2. No samples of previous work: Legit writers should have anonymized samples.
  3. Guarantees of job placement: No one can guarantee you a job. That's a huge scam signal. 🚩
  4. One-size-fits-all approach: If they don't ask about your specific industry or goals, run.
What I'm looking for:
  • Writers who specialize in my field (I'm in environmental science 🌎).
  • Good reviews on sites like Trustpilot or Reddit.
  • A clear process that involves a consultation call.
Has anyone used a service they absolutely loved? Or one to absolutely avoid? I want to make a smart investment, not a desperate one. Please share your experiences! 🙏

I used a service last year and learned some hard lessons. Here's what I wish I'd known:

Green flags I missed:
  • They should ask for way more info than you expect. My writer sent a 3-page questionnaire and then scheduled a 45-minute call. That's how they pull out your real accomplishments.
  • They should specialize. Someone who writes for everyone writes for no one. Environmental science needs different language than business or tech.
  • They should offer a free consultation first. If they want payment before even talking to you? Run.
The service I used was TopResume and honestly? Mid. Not terrible but very template-y. My friend used a smaller agency called "Green Light Resumes" (eco-focused) and her results looked way more authentic.

Hope this helps! 🌿
