What I've learned about community college transfers from Cabrillo reviews

I've been reading student reviews of Cabrillo College to figure out my transfer plan. Here's what I'm learning.

The marine biology program is strong. Multiple reviews mention that the program is “hands-on” and “professors are invested.” One student said: “We go to the beach for class. You can't beat that.”

The transfer support is real. A reviewer wrote: “Cabrillo has articulation agreements with UCSC. My advisor mapped out my entire transfer path. I knew exactly which classes to take.”

The campus is beautiful. Several reviews mention the “ocean views” and “peaceful atmosphere.” One student said: “It's a commuter school, but the setting makes it special.”

The challenge is competition. Another student said: “Marine bio is popular. Get your prerequisites done early. Classes fill up.”

My plan: I'll meet with my advisor immediately. I'll follow the transfer pathway closely. I'll apply early. I'm not expecting a perfect path, but I'm confident Cabrillo is the right start.

Okay so here's something the reviews might not tell you: the marine bio program is strong but the intro classes are weeder courses. They pack like 40 students in and it's competitive. Not impossible but stressful. The upper-level stuff is smaller and better. Also, the articulation agreements with UCSC are excellent but double check everything. I had one class that my advisor said would transfer and then UCSC said no. That was a mess. So get it in writing. Email the UCSC transfer center yourself. Don't rely only on Cabrillo's word. Other than that? Great school. Beautiful spot. You'll be fine, Nicolas. 📝

The beach classes are not a gimmick. My friend did marine bio at Cabrillo and she literally had to identify species in the tide pools while getting splashed. That's real learning. UCSC professors told her she was better prepared than their own juniors. The transfer support works if you use it. Don't just meet with an advisor once. Meet every semester. Bring questions. Write things down. You've got this, Nicolas. 🦀
