Seeking free writing software with seamless Markdown support and preview

Hey all! ✌️ I've recently fallen down the Markdown rabbit hole and I'm never going back. It's just so clean and efficient for formatting without taking my hands off the keyboard. I write everything in Markdown now—notes, articles, and now my first draft.

I'm looking for the best free writing software that has first-class Markdown support. What I really need is a split-screen view: one pane for my raw Markdown text, and a live-updating, beautifully rendered preview pane next to it. Exporting to PDF or Word (for when I have to send drafts to non-techy people) is also a must.

I've tried Ghostwriter and loved it, but I'm curious if there are any other good options for Windows or Linux. What do you use for a pure Markdown writing experience? Help a syntax-lover out! 😎

I went through this exact search last semester when I got tired of Google Docs messing up my formatting. 🙃

On Windows, Mark Text is my absolute favorite. It's free, open-source, and gives you that clean, distraction-free vibe while still handling Markdown beautifully . It has a real-time preview (though it's more WYSIWYG than split-pane), and exporting to PDF is super smooth .

But if you're set on that classic split-screen view, MarkdownPad is the old reliable for Windows . The free version does everything you need—live preview side-by-side, customizable CSS, and export options. Just note that the free version doesn't have the GitHub Flavored Markdown engine, but for basic writing? It's solid.

Good luck with the draft! ✍️
