Hey Golden State fam! I just graduated from CSULB and landed a full-time position, and I HAD to share how I cracked the code on how to find a job as a california student . Spoiler: your university career center is a GOLDMINE, and most students sleep on it!
First – Handshake is your best friend. At CSULB, we use CareerLINK (similar platform), and I set up job alerts so opportunities came straight to my inbox . I found my internship there! Also, check out Careershift – it's for domestic AND international job/internship searches, and it's free through your university .
Second – Big Interview changed my life. I practiced mock interviews online, tailored to my industry, and by the time the real thing came around, I was so much more confident . No more freezing up when they ask behavioral questions!
Third – BEACH NEXUS (or whatever your school's networking platform is) – it's an exclusive network of alumni who WANT to help students . I connected with a grad who worked at my dream company, and she gave me insider tips that helped me land the job. Networking works, y'all!
Fourth – don't forget CalJOBS! It's California's official employment portal with a complete set of tools for job seekers . I also browsed Glassdoor and LinkedIn constantly .
And if you're eligible for Federal Work-Study, USE IT. UC San Diego has great info about both on-campus and off-campus work-study opportunities, including partnerships with research institutes and tutoring programs . Even if you don't have work-study, general student employment is still an option .
Oh, and check out California CareerZone – it's an intuitive career exploration website that helps you connect occupations, colleges, and degrees . I used it early on to figure out what I actually wanted to do!
California has SO many resources. You just have to know where to look! Feel free to ask me anything – happy to help my fellow California students succeed!
